Cognitive Disability

What is Cognitive Disability?

Cognitive disability is defined by The Arizona Division of Developmental
Disabilities (DDD) as "sub-average intellectual functioning that does not
include learning disabilities."  The term has been used to describe a
large spectrum of disorders and conditions and is therefore quite broad.
There are a tremendous amount of cognitive developmental disabilities
including Down Syndrome, Autism, Dementia, Traumatic Brain Injury,
Dyslexia, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder and other
neurological impairments.

Children and adults with cognitive disabilities typically have greater
difficulty with one or more types of mental tasks then the “average”
person. Most cognitive disabilities have a basis in both biological and
mental processes.  Individuals with cognitive developmental disabilities
may struggle with:

• Concentration & attention

• Perception

• Planning & organizing

• Written & oral communication

• Short & long-term memory

• Judgment

• Sequencing

• Orientation

Cognitive disabilities in children can be difficult to diagnose.  Diagnosis
can involve interviews with parents, detailed medical history evaluations,
clinical observations as well as other screenings and tests.
