Autism

Autism Spectrum Disorder in adults and children causes severe
and pervasive impairment in thinking, feeling, language, and
the ability to relate to others. These disorders are usually first
diagnosed in early childhood and range from a severe form,
called autistic disorder, through pervasive development
disorder not otherwise specified (PDD-NOS), to a much milder
form knows as Asperger syndrome.

Autism Spectrum Disorder in children can be difficult to
diagnose but the earlier the disorder is diagnosed, the sooner
autism spectrum therapies can begin.  Early intervention is
critical to managing and improving autism spectrum disorders.

Children and adults with Autism Spectrum Disorders
demonstrate deficits in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal
communication, as well as repetitive behaviors or interests. In
addition, they will often have unusual responses to sensory
experiences, such as particular sounds or the way objects look.
Because those with Autism Spectrum Disorders lack meaningful
gestures or the language to ask for things, they often have a
hard time letting people know what they need. This leads to
frustration and may result in the adult or child simply screaming
or grabbing what they want. Autism Spectrum therapies teach
them better ways to express their needs.

Some possible indicators of Autism Spectrum Disorders:

    * Does not babble, point, or make meaningful gestures by 1
       year old
    * Does not speak a single word by 16 months
    * Does not combine two words by 2 years
    * Does not respond to name
    * Loses language or social skills

Some other indicators of Autism Spectrum Disorder in children
may include:

    * Poor eye contact
    * Doesn't seem to know how to play with toys
    * Constantly lines up toys or other objects
    * Is attached to one particular toy or object
    * Doesn't smile
    * At times seems to be hearing impaired
