Developmental Disabilities Diagnosis

Early diagnosis and intervention can have a
tremendous impact on the quality of life for
developmentally disabled children, developmentally
disabled adults as well as their families, but
obtaining a diagnosis isn’t always easy.
Pinpointing the signs and symptoms of Autism,
Cognitive Disability, Cerebral Palsy or Epilepsy can
be challenging for healthcare providers and family
members alike.

The diagnosis of developmental disabilities
typically involves a series of parental interviews,
detailed medical history evaluations, clinical
observations as well as a wide variety of
screenings and tests.  From this, a healthcare
provider is usually able to diagnose children with
developmental disabilities.

A developmental disability diagnosis of Autism,
Cognitive Disability, Cerebral Palsy or Epilepsy can
be upsetting, but it’s important to know that these
complex disorders are treatable - especially with
early intervention and diagnosis.  In fact, the
sooner a child is diagnosed, the sooner that child
can begin family therapy, occupational therapy or
other treatment modalities.

To qualify for services through the Division of
Developmental Disabilities (DDD), adults with
developmental disabilities must have had an
Autism, Cognitive Disability, Cerebral Palsy or
Epilepsy developmental disability diagnosis prior
to the age of 18 with proof that the disability will
more than likely continue indefinitely.

For children younger than the age of six, a
diagnosis of At Risk for a Developmental Disability
may qualify for DDD services as well.  After your
loved one turns six years of age, there must be a
continuing diagnosis of Autism, Cognitive
Disability, Cerebral Palsy or Epilepsy for them to
remain eligible for particpation.
